“Other courses may be more challenging and have grander clubhouses but few can compare with the serenity and beauty of Blacklion where both the tee box at the 180- yards, par-3, 2nd hole and the green daringly jut out into the lake making the task of keeping your ball dry more than a little daunting.

Before I ever heard of the golf course of Blacklion, I was aware of the celebrity chef and television personality, Neven Maguire. How opportunistic it was, therefore, to find out that he is the head chef and proprietor of the MacNean House and Restaurant in Blacklion, not far from the golf club?

The thought of sampling Neven’s gastronomic delights après le golf was irresistible. I may have gone to Blacklion for a ‘quick nine holes of golf’ but after it I lingered to sample the delicious food.

Established in 1962, Blacklion is a mixture of newly planted woodlands, mature trees and a beautiful lake that is in play on four of the holes. There are also magnificent views of the surrounding hills and the afore-mentioned, Lough MacNean and its many islands.

Among Blacklion GC’s main assets are its excellent conditioning and friendly down-to-earth, unpretentious and homespun ethos. Visitors are made to feel very much at home. The culture of voluntary labour (reminiscent of my experiences in New Zealand) pervades with the members contributing freely of their time and enthusiasm to the club’s welfare.”
